Therapeutic
Applications of Ashtanga Yoga
Patanjali’s
Eight Limbed System has great therapeutic value and
discipline. The yogasana (physical posture) is a way of
bringing awareness into action in a particular position as
well as purifying the mind and body. Control of the mind is
established by quieting and stilling the mind, so the object
of perception becomes the Divine Self not the thought waves.
In the broadest sense, Yoga brings our attention to the
Divine Self. This process creates a self-referral loop which
brings the sadhaka (practitioner) to Self realization. This
system has become the basis for Yoga Psychology and is
useful in treating emotional disturbances such as
depression, anxiety and addictions. It goes even deeper as a
facilitator in the healing process of physical symptoms
brought on by mental disturbances from the stress of modern
day life.
